Wicked fast! The swim team won a quad meet at Marist last week, topping Marist, Providence and Duluth. Stacia Schactera won the 100-breast and 200-IM and Hannah Kissack won the 100-fly and neared state qualification time in the 100-breast. Sarah Merkel was second in both the 200- and 500-free and Sophia Goldwasser (500-free) and Christine Georgakakos (50-free) both dropped times….The MS also swam, ones who stepped up included Hannah Weiss, Chris, Josh and Zach Waldron, and Ret Terrell.
Five straight! The Lady Bears basketball team (14-3, 2-0) has won five in a row and is ranked #7 in the state. They bested Mt. Paran in subregion action Friday, Paideia Saturday and returned home to knock off Walker in another subregion game last night. Madison McBride scored 14, 14 and 10 to lead in the three games. Eryn Delaney had 12 rebounds against Paideia. Shamaz Denerson has been named Female Athlete of the Week by the Northside Neighbor…The JV girls – after losing their opener – have now won nine straight after beating Paran, Paideia and Walker. Brooke DeVore scored 12 and McKenzie Bolden 10 while Kathryn Robinson and Nikki Herzog pulled nine and seven rebounds against Mt. Paran. In the Paideia win, 10 different girls scored. Devore and Robinson had 10 each against Walker; Shamoya Bailey pulled seven boards…The 7th grade girls topped Landmark behind Mary Hollis Schmidt’s eight points and seven steals. They beat St. Martin’s 18-16 Monday; Lucy Saltmarsh had seven points and nine steals. …8th grade knocked off Lovett 27-24; Bolden scored nine and Bailey McBride seven.
Subregion success: The boys hoops squad is now 2-0 in the subregion after racking up wins over Mt. Paran and Walker. Despite a loss to No. 9-ranked Paideia in between, it appears Coach Mike Harner’s team is turning the corner. Hamilton Bailey scored 21, 15 and 18 in the three games and DeMarcus Acree pumped in 21, 20 and 20. Bailey handed out nine assists vs. Walker; Kramer Deans pulled 13 boards against Mt. Paran…Andy Nichols scored 15 points but the JV boys lost a close one to Mt. Paran Friday.
State alternates! The Mat Bears wrestling team placed fifth among 14 teams last weekend at the Area Duals at Eagles Landing Christian. The Bears beat Walker and No. 4-seeded Telfair before bowing to state power Commerce and Athens Christian. As a result, they are alternates in the State Duals which kick off this weekend. “This is the first time we’ve sniffed the state in school history,” Coach Jeff Walrich said. Both Chris Mann and Alfie Farris went 4-0; Lee Davis and Jack Watts were 3-1 and going 2-2 were Garrett Sizemore and Christian Rasmussen. Others who stood out included Will and Peter Allen and William Fisher..…The JV wrestlers earned a huge 24-18 win over 1A powerhouse Bremen last Wednesday behind key pins from Court Fanning, Will and Peter Allen.
