Pin! Varsity wrestlers took third at the Blessed Trinity Tournament last weekend, despite not taking a full team. First-place finishers included Jason Grimes (152) and Lee Davis (160), while John Hiles (103) and Wes Fanning (130) took second. Court Fanning (119) and Jack Thomson (215) were fourth. HI routed St. Pius 76-6 Tuesday on Senior Night backed by pins from Hiles, Court Fanning, Stephen Williams, Wes Fanning and Davis. They compete this weekend at Darlington in the Area Meet, where the top four individuals in each weight class qualify for state…The JV competed at the King of the Hill Tournament last weekend at Collins Hill. Brendan Quigley remained undefeated, William Morton earned fifth and Malik Hatcher was impressive. Against Pius Tuesday, Quigley, Hatcher, Ross Waters and Thomas Coleman won by pins; Joseph Brinkley won by a technical fall…The MS wrestled at Woodward; top finishers for the ‘B” team included Andrew Thompson (2nd), Chris Shaw (2nd), Joseph Charron (2nd), Jake Walton (3rd), Fred Sager and Hunter Williams (4th). For the ‘A’ team, Rod Davis finished first and Jack Ballou second.
One-on-one! Girls’ hoops split a pair – they bagged a 5A victory over Fellowship Friday before falling to Towns County the next night. Against FCA, Bailey McBride amassed 13 assists, Lexy Kepano scored 15 and had eight rebounds and McKenzie Bolden netted 13 and had four steals. In the Towns clash, Bolden led with 18, Kepano pulled 10 boards, Bailey McDearis scored 10 and McBride dished out seven assists. They face AIS Friday at home. ...JV dropped games to FCA and Towns County over the weekend…Preston Tucker and Lily Wood led the 8th grade in a loss to Westminster Saturday…7th grade upended GAC in tournament play led by 14 points from Chelsea Zoller. They topped Woodward 50-12 Tuesday.
Swish! Boys’ hoops bombed King’s Ridge Tuesday after losing a heartbreaker to FCA Friday. Against King’s Ridge, John Allen scored 11 and pulled seven rebounds; Ed Voyles netted 11 with six boards, Jim Voyles grabbed 12 rebounds and James Best seven. Against FCA, Jim Voyles and Will Small both scored nine; Voyles also pulled 11 rebounds and took two charges. AIS comes to HIES Friday…Ethan Turner scored 18 in a huge win over King’s Ridge Tuesday for the JV, while Carter Brehm and Ben Asbury led in a landslide victory over FCA Friday…For the 8th grade, Sam Asbury scored a season high 26 points in a semifinal win over Paideia Friday; then led with 11 in a loss in the finals to Pace. He scored 11 again against Woodward Tuesday…Brent Duncan scored 10 for the 7th grade in a tournament loss to Fulton Academy and led with 15 in a loss to Woodward Tuesday. Steve Couvaras chipped in 12 vs. Woodward.
Splash! The girls’ swim team took first and the boys’ third last Saturday at Pace. The boys’ relay team of Warner Ray, Bates Jones, Patrick Hayes and Clayton DeHaven made a state cut, while Kathleen Charron made it in three events – the 50-free, the 100-fly and the 500-free. She has qualified in every event except the backstroke. Four relay teams have earned bids – the boys’ 200-free and 200-medley and the girls’ 200-free and 200-medley. State is Feb. 11th-12th at Georgia Tech.
Fore! Senior Blake Snellings has committed to continue his golf career next season at Stetson University. Snellings has been a mainstay for the HIES squad that has finished third in state the past two seasons.
Alum success! Shamaz Denerson (’09), former Lady Bear hoops’ star, was named Great South Athletic Conference Player of the Week last week for the second time this year. Starring at Salem College in NC, Denerson is averaging 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Spirits. Denerson played a vital role in leading the Bears to a playoff berth her senior season at HI.
