| | Holy Innocents' Celebrates Its 50th Anniversary
On September 8, 1959, Holy Innocents' Parish Day School (the original name of HIES) first opened its doors. While the school's founders probably never imagined classrooms full of laptop computers or interactive white boards, they were certainly guided by the same principles found in today’s HIES Mission Statement: to develop in students a love of learning, respect for self and others, faith in God and a sense of service to the world community.
Throughout its history, the school has enjoyed consistent and steady growth. That first year, 72 students enrolled, from three-year-olds through first-grade. Today, more than 1,370 students, from early learners to high school seniors, walk the halls. The physical campus has seen its share of growth, as well. In the early '60's, the school quickly outgrew the church's Parish Hall and administrative offices, building two classrooms in just its third year. Since then, the campus has grown to more than 45 acres, with separate Pre-School, Lower School, Middle School and Upper School facilities, a Fine Arts Building, two modern gymnasiums, business and administrative offices, and sprawling athletics fields and facilities.
The Fall 2009 edition of Torchbearer takes a look back over these fifty golden years.
