Honors Presented to Upper School Students

On Sept. 17, Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School presented three scholarship awards to Upper School students. A small ceremony was held with school leaders and the recipients’ families.

Sophomore Ariel Abernathy received the Frank L. Butler/Marilyn Butler Blane Memorial Scholarship Award, which is given to a student in good academic standing who exhibits a selfless attitude, demonstrates an ability to lead and actively participates in the community. Ariel is a member of the track & field team, Peoples Club, Girl Up and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She has volunteered with Crimson and Gold and with the Admissions office; she was selected as one of six students to attend the NAIS People of Color Conference. After losing her dad to Lou Gehrig’s disease the summer before her freshman year, she persevered through tragedy and has worked to raise awareness and funds for ALS. Ariel was described as “an excellent example of each characteristic presented here. She gives of herself to see others do well and works tirelessly to support the work of our HIES community.”

Junior Abigail Jablon received the National Honor Society Scholarship Award, which is awarded to a student who demonstrates exceptional academic ability and performance. Academically, she is among the top students in her grade and exhibits a love of learning in all classes. A teacher said that she is “dedicated to her work; her academic performance exudes excellence and her character is unparalleled.”

Senior James Watson received the Alice L. Malcolm Headmaster's Award, presented by Mrs. Betsy Malcolm on behalf of the Malcolm family. The award is given to a rising senior who best exemplifies the philosophy of the school. James was recognized for his leadership in Student Council, for which he currently serves as Student Body Executive President. He is a member of the varsity soccer and varsity cross country teams and he helped to create the Spirit App. James was described by Head of School Mr. Paul Barton as “respectful, hard-working, kind and a student who loves to learn.”

Congratulations to each of the students for their accomplishments!
