It is with both heavy hearts and deep gratitude that we mourn and remember Edward England, a cherished member of the HIES community and the namesake of England Plaza. Mr. England served the HIES community from 1983-1999 as the assistant headmaster alongside former headmaster Alice Malcolm. Information on a memorial service is forthcoming.
Mr. England was instrumental in the creation of the HIES Upper School, of which he was the first principal.
"Edward England played a central role in making HIES the thriving school it is today. We’re grateful for his legacy of leadership, and our thoughts and prayers go out to his loved ones during this difficult time," Paul Barton, head of school, said.
"He loved the children to excess...he really loved this place and was one of the reasons it is such a wonderful school today," Dorothy Sullivan, former associate headmaster and a long-time colleague of Mr. England, said. "Edward loved practical jokes...he would steal food from anyone he was sitting with at lunch!"
Mr. England will be fondly remembered for guiding the school through a time of significant change, for his sense of humor and deep love for his family and for Holy Innocents' Episcopal School.
"One of the tests of a good school is you pick five random people and ask them separately, 'What’s the mission of the school?' And the saying is if you get five separate answers, run. If you get four answers, that’s good, but if all five answers are the same, that’s the place you want to be. And that’s what I notice about HI. I haven’t tried that test in the last few years, but next time I go, I think I will. And I’ll get five answers that are the same.” –Edward England, 2019
