Global Education

Travel and Exchange Partnerships

Travel can be a powerful form of experiential learning and our travel programs at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School offer students an opportunity to develop skills and attitudes essential to global citizenship. By challenging students to consider new perspectives and different cultures, our trips seek to integrate a Holy Innocents’ education with the shifting realities of the wider world. Led by experienced members of the HIES faculty and staff in consultation with established professional travel contractors, our programs also allow students to deepen their relationships with adults and with one another. Like Mark Twain, our hope is that students return to campus with a deeper appreciation for the human experience and a broadened worldview that prepares them for college and life beyond.

As with our Round Square membership, then, travel and exchange partnerships play an important role in teaching to global competence and helping HIES students develop a global mindset. At its C.O.R.E., international travel encourages:
  • Courage to step away from familiar surroundings and lean into discomfort
  • Openness to new experiences, new people and new perspectives
  • Reflection on the journey: Where have I been? What have I done? How will I think and live differently as a result of my experience?
  • Empathy for others, compassion for myself and care for the environment
