The Running Bears opened their 2019 season with the annual Haley Kolff time trial Saturday among eight teams. Though no team scores were kept, Coach Stephen Jayaraj left the building happy with what he saw.
The meet consisted of the 100, 300, 600-meter dashes, as well as the 1,600, the shot put, high jump and the long jump.
In the sprints, it was Sarai Jackson and TyQuann Alexander who rose to the top. Sarai won the 100 in a time of 13.77; TyQuann crossed the tape first in the same distance in 11.73. TyQuann also finished third in the 300.
Sydney Stout also came up big in both the 300 and 600; she took fourth in the 300 and third in the 600.
Aidan Zeissner proved once again he is more than legit, winning the 600 in 1:28.02 and taking fourth in the 300. Nick Gonzalez was second in the 300. Omari Gordon and Gonzalez finished third and fourth respectively in the 100.
The 1,600 race was a good one for the Bears, as William Welden turned in a 4:50 while Liam Hill broke the 5-minute barrier with a 4:58. Colin Peters was also impressive at 5:05.
In the field events, Bennett Baugus won the shot put with a throw of 38:02.
The Running Bears will be in action again this Saturday at the Marietta Distance Carnival held at Marietta High School.
