Parent Ed Feature

Are the kids really alright? (An overview of the emotional health issues facing today’s students)
Mark E. Crawford, Ph.D.

Most parents are aware that mental health is a critical issue for today’s youth. The Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry reported that one out of every four or five adolescents in the United States meets criteria for a mental disorder with severe impairment across their lifetime. However, issues like anxiety, depression, suicide, substance abuse, and other mental health issues can be easily misunderstood and difficult to talk about. Mark Crawford, Ph.D. (a clinical psychologist who has worked with students and families from the Atlanta area for 28 years) will discuss what today’s youth are facing, help separate fact from fiction, and will discuss what parents need to know about these issues.
Date: Friday, November 30
Time: 8:30am - 10:30am
Location: Holy Innocents' Church- Inglett Room C
Parent Education is an important service the PA provides to our parent community and falls under the Community Life program of the HIES Parents' Association. Our Parent Education program provides parents with opportunities to hear from local and national educational experts, special guest speakers, and from teachers and parents within our HIES community with experience in childhood education / development on a wide range of child related topics such as academics, emotional and social development, and other current parenting and education related topics.

Parent Education programs are generally divided into two main groups: Primary / Lower School and Middle / Upper School (though our Parent Education Course Catalog identifies the target audience for each course so that parents can target the courses that will most closely meet their needs based on the grades and ages of their children).
