The Model UN Team made its annual trip to Vanderbilt University this past weekend to take part in VUMUN for the sixth consecutive year.
"The 18 students that participated in the trip all did a fantastic job and represented HIES admirably," Kacey Michelsen, Upper School History Department chair, said.
This is the fourth consecutive year that HIES had students receive accolades in the closing ceremonies—no small task considering that students do all of their preparation on their own and most of the students from other schools take a special class to do their prep.
Both Blake Ainsworth and Will Scarborough (co-Secretary General) received Verbal Commendations (fourth place) for their efforts in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms committee—this committee was tasked with resolving the immense power struggle occurring in China nearly 2000 years ago, with the political, cultural and ideological future of China hanging in the balance.
"A huge congratulations goes out to Katie Leonard, our other Secretary General this year, for receiving an Honorable Mention for her representation of the United Sates in South China Sea Crisis Committee—a council tasked with resolving the very tense issue of maritime boundaries, 'freedom of navigation' operations and the ownership of certain islands or banks in an increasingly competitive region," Mr. Michelsen said. "The countries involved in this dispute include Brunei, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam.
Mr. Michelsen said this is an issue that many Americans pay little attention to, "but Katie nailed it at this conference."
"Thank you to the entire team for working so hard and giving up a weekend to participate in the conference," he said. "And thank you to the HIES community for your continued support of the Model UN Team and their amazing efforts."
Model UN Team members on the trip include Andersson Niepoky, Miller Taylor, Abby Barnes, Zak Kerr, Shannon Huskins, Tyler Fuller, Reese Pittard, Emma Schlatterer, Sophie Swanson, Andrew Keller, Lane Estes, Madeline Merrill, Haley Robinson, Caroline Berkey, Tanvi Shanbhag, Will Scarborough (Secretary General), Katie Leonard (Secretary General) and Blake Ainsworth.
