Mat Bears Qualify Nine for State

After qualifying only two for the state finals last year, Coach Stacey Davis and his Mat Bears will send nine this time around.

The Bears got it done in Irwin County in the Sectionals Friday and Saturday, where the top six in each weight class earned a bid to Macon, slated for this upcoming weekend. Last Saturday, the Bears sent 13 to Sectionals in winning the Traditional Area.

“This was a good weekend of wrestling,” Coach Davis summarized. “I’m excited to see our team back at state with solid representation.”

Jake Swink – after claiming an area title – also finished first Saturday while Michael Cox took second. Art Martinez, Reagan Sherk, and Tyler White all finished third; Robert McDonald was fourth.

Charlie King, Sam Cravey, and James Gleeson were all fifth; Conor Swennumson finished seventh and will make the trip as an alternate.

Good luck Bears!
